UK Needs to Catch Up with Worldwide Improvement in Broadband Infrastructure

October 25th, 2009

Recently, Oxford University’s Said Business School and Spain’s University of Oviedo’s Department of Applied Economics conducted a detailed survey of the broadband preparedness of 66 countries across the world. The survey was done on behalf of Cisco Systems, a technology provider.

The aim of the study was to see which countries are capable of meeting the growing demand for broadband in coming years. Not only is the number of subscribers increasing, but the subscribers now use applications, which support fast internet connection, and a lot of data downloads. Thus, the study looked at the plans of the countries regarding the increase in broadband speeds.

It was found that the UK falls much behind countries like South Korea, which intend to have 1 Gb speed by 2012, while the UK aims to reach 2 Mb within the same period.

In the list of countries’ preparedness for future broadband, the UK ranks 25th, even below countries like Romania.

The survey classified the countries in four groups of ‘Ready for tomorrow’, ‘Comfortable for today’, ‘Meeting needs for today’ and ‘Below needs for today’, depending on their upload and download speeds and the availability of internet for the population. The survey put the UK in ‘Meeting needs for today’ group, which comes as quite a surprise. This survey puts those countries higher that have fast internet or are making internet available to a larger part of their population.

One improvement that the study shows is that compared to last year, there are more countries prepared for high-speed internet currently, as more countries have been put into ‘Ready for tomorrow’ group. Thus, the study shows that the world is moving towards better internet, though the UK is lagging behind and needs to catch up.
