On the Internet’s Imprint on Public Relations
July 30th, 2010
Unarguably the greatest change in how commercial enterprises function nowadays is in how they communicate with the public. Whereas in the past, a business would use printed publications, today we have the internet. And so this too has influenced how organizations carry out public relations. Now that blogging has become common, all of a sudden we’re reading informal updates straight from CEOs rather than the usual polite, formal editorials commonly found in their corporate brochure. Also we’re hearing more from companies too, with their website being perpetually updated. With the recent introduction of sites like Twitter, business organisations are also microblogging too.
Also the internet has made communication a lot less passive and far more involved. Now those surfing the net effectively vote for your advertizement by clicking it, or sign up to your mailing list, or enquire immediately to you using your online forms. With this activity, we understand so much more about target markets due to the trail of clicks they leave behind with their activity. Therefore it’s critical that an organization can respond to the opinions provided by their visitors and shape their messages accordingly.
So with these changes, does that mean companies have much greater opportunity to ensure how the market views them? Without doubt it does! Companies are now spending evermore time on PR, as a lot more new opportunities have become available with technological advances. With that added control nonetheless, there is the increased chance to make faults too, and so our advice is to use a PR organization to start with. Learn from them. How do they use all the new media that is now available? They have experience in understanding what works, and what isn’t effective. They can rapidly highlight your weaknesses and bolster your strengths in terms of your relationship with the public. A good place to start in terms of locating a PR firm is Google. Just type a key phrase like public relations agency and you will discover a number of public relations companies prepared and willing to serve your requirements.
