New Tool to Monitor Piracy Activity on the Internet

December 17th, 2009

It is a veritable fact that internet users often resort to illegal file sharing. Although this type of file sharing is an infringement of copyright laws, still service providers have failed to stop this practice that results in significant revenue loss for different businesses.

Virgin Media, one of the leading service providers in the UK, has now announced a trial to monitor acts of piracy by using a new inspection tool. The new Deep Packet Inspection tool, known as CView, will be able to monitor P2P (peer-to-peer) file sharing among its users. Since this is just a trial, only forty percent of the users will be monitored.

The company spokesperson has told news site The Register that this trial will help in understanding changing consumer behaviour and will give an idea of the extent of this practice. Virgin Media has no plans to use the data it collects against individual users. Rather the company will use this data to streamline its intended launch of the music downloading service.

Jon James, the executive director of the Broadband services of Virgin Media, is of the view that if the government moves to frame a law against net piracy, then the data collected from this trial will help in reducing copyright infringement. See Virgin Broadband Deals for latest offerings and provider information.

Internet users who are champions of the privacy clause have voiced their opposition to this proposal of monitoring. Campaigners at NoDPI.og are very vocal about this and consider the trial a breach of the e-Privacy Directive.

Advertising Revenues on Mobile Still Remain Low as Usage Grows

November 30th, 2009

Mobile broadband usage has been increasing day by day. This makes the medium an ideal one for the promotion of advertising. However, if industry figures are anything to go by, the channel is yet to pick up the kind of advertising revenues it has the potential to generate.

Every day newspapers carry reports of increasing popularity of mobile broadband networks. The usage rate has gone up to such an extent that analysts are now concerned if the current network capacities will be sufficient to bear the load. Recent predictions indicate a forty-fold increase in mobile broadband usage by 2017. Other analysts talk of exponential growth, while some have raised the fears of network chaos as utilization levels reach saturation, causing the networks to choke.

It is also believed that if network chaos happens before new technology arrives, users will face considerable problems with their networks.

With growth levels of usage, the medium should be there on every marketer’s radar. The channel has a major advantage in terms of its reach, and it provides a cost-effective medium to spread advertising messages. Some of the service providers have experimented with putting up and renting out advertising space on their login page, which subscribers can see the moment they connect to the network. However, the returns so far have not been anywhere close to expectations.

The Westminster eForum Keynote Seminar, ‘More than Talk… The Future of Mobile‘ focused on exactly this subject. Speaking on the occasion, the managing partner of advertising agency agenda21 digital explained that though the potential for advertising remained high, very little of the potential has been realized. He said that though mobile web usage has exploded, a corresponding growth in ad revenues is yet to materialize.

There are a number of points to consider when choosing the mobile broadband. If you choose to look for laptop deals through Mobile Broadband Genie, you will be given all the information you need about each supplier on their comparative table of UK broadband providers to help guide you through the decision process.

3 Mobile to Offer Spotify Music Soon

November 12th, 2009

The UK’s top mobile operator 3 has signed up with Spotify to make the latter’s huge library of music available to its future customers. The deal, which was worked out recently, will be a second such deal of bringing music to the mobile handset. 3 was also the first mobile operator to sign up Nokia’s revolutionary ‘Comes with Music’ deal.

The music service will be launched with the introduction of the HTC Hero mobile handset, which 3 is expected to unveil during Christmas this year. Later on, more models will have Spotify music as part of their basic package. While tariffs have not been decided yet, Spotify might prefer to offer its premium (advert-free) services on mobile handsets.

Spotify has confirmed that this deal is aimed at broadening its user base. By making it a mobile phone compatible feature, Spotify will expand its services reach millions of mobile phones users. The current Spotify application offers legal access to a huge library of music for invitees only.

Internet geeks as well as other users have shown immense interest in this application. The company expects that with such proven demand, its plan to turn mobile phones into access tools will surely find success.

It does go without saying though, you don’t have to be a mobile internet geek to want to learn more about the latest offerings for 3 mobile and other service providers.

UK Needs to Catch Up with Worldwide Improvement in Broadband Infrastructure

October 25th, 2009

Recently, Oxford University’s Said Business School and Spain’s University of Oviedo’s Department of Applied Economics conducted a detailed survey of the broadband preparedness of 66 countries across the world. The survey was done on behalf of Cisco Systems, a technology provider.

The aim of the study was to see which countries are capable of meeting the growing demand for broadband in coming years. Not only is the number of subscribers increasing, but the subscribers now use applications, which support fast internet connection, and a lot of data downloads. Thus, the study looked at the plans of the countries regarding the increase in broadband speeds.

It was found that the UK falls much behind countries like South Korea, which intend to have 1 Gb speed by 2012, while the UK aims to reach 2 Mb within the same period.

In the list of countries’ preparedness for future broadband, the UK ranks 25th, even below countries like Romania.

The survey classified the countries in four groups of ‘Ready for tomorrow’, ‘Comfortable for today’, ‘Meeting needs for today’ and ‘Below needs for today’, depending on their upload and download speeds and the availability of internet for the population. The survey put the UK in ‘Meeting needs for today’ group, which comes as quite a surprise. This survey puts those countries higher that have fast internet or are making internet available to a larger part of their population.

One improvement that the study shows is that compared to last year, there are more countries prepared for high-speed internet currently, as more countries have been put into ‘Ready for tomorrow’ group. Thus, the study shows that the world is moving towards better internet, though the UK is lagging behind and needs to catch up.

However, to know more about broadband UK, you can visit broadbandgenie.co.uk and click best broadband provider to have a look at their comparison table of the products and services of the top internet service providers.

3 UK Unveils New Mobile Wi-Fi Service

September 14th, 2009

The new mobile Wi-Fi service, named as MiFi, from the mobile broadband network 3, has finally been made public with its pricing and availability, right in time for Christmas festivities.

MiFi is scheduled to be in the market by September 17 via the internet and telemarketing services, and it will come in stores only after the 18th of the month. The customers have been given a choice between ‘Broadband 5GB 1 month’ plan and the ‘Ready to Go’ kit. The former scheme will entail a monthly rental of 15 pounds and a wireless modem of 69.99 pounds. However, the latter scheme carries a package with a wireless modem and 3GB data transfer facility that can be used for a period of three months for 99.99 pounds.

The service makes use of a wireless modem enabling the build up of a mobile Wi-Fi connection that can serve up to five users at one time. This MiFi device is also supposed to be quite easy to use and needs almost no technical knowledge or software installation for operation. The device just requires a 3 SIM Card to be inserted and plugged into a Wi-Fi enabled device like a netbook, a smart phone or an iPod. These gadgets can detect the signal on their own and allow simultaneous activities like downloading and browsing.

According to Sales & Marketing Director at 3 UK, Marc Allera, mobile Wi-Fi is a necessity in present times, where everyone wants easy internet accessibility on the move. He said 3 is not only trying to make internet access through mobile phone easier but also easily affordable for the common man. He emphasized that the new service could form a great combination with laptops (click for free laptops offers) and iPods, which will be hot gifts during the Christmas shopping season.

Despite Increasing Popularity of the Internet, Many Europeans Yet to Discover its Advantages

August 18th, 2009

The findings of a European Commission report show that one-third of the European population has never used a website, experienced online banking, searched for anything on Google, or interacted on Facebook.

The fact that this finding is astounding shows that the internet has become deeply ingrained in our lives. Owing to mobile broadband, people can now use the internet at any time or place, made even more convenient with a free laptop that are being offered with mobile broadband by many of the service providers. This makes it difficult to imagine that some people have never used online shopping sites or blogged.

The study however states that people who have not used the internet are mostly those who are either aged or who cannot pay for it. Besides, the percentage of such people has decreased significantly in the last one year.

The research states that the information technology sector has not been as badly hit by the economic turmoil as other businesses have. It also says that countries with a high number of broadband internet users can in fact help the European economy to get back on its feet.

Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media, is of the opinion that the digital communications industry of Europe can help in sustainable economic growth by providing jobs and can lead to generation of wealth in various industries. The governments of different nations should act in this regard and make laws that remove restrictions against new services, she said.

Which HDTV Screen Should You Buy?

June 26th, 2009

The market for HDTV televisions has continued to enlarge more and more. Not only are many different television sets available, but there are different technologies that are used to power screens. Each one of these technologies has its own distinctive traits. Some of them have higher contrast while others are known for their durability and overall reliability. While there are in fact more than six HDTV technologies in the market including LED and LCoS, the ones that are most known and more common are LCD, Plasma and DLP. Of course, they all do the same thing but in a different way.

The most popular technology is now LCD. LCD stands for liquid crystal display. These sets can display outstanding and vibrant colors. They do not have the refection problem that Plasma HDTV televisions have and they are very energy efficient. If you decide on one of these sets you have to be sure the model is top quality since the performance of these sets varies a lot between models and brands. On good sets however, colors can be mesmerizing and very rich. DLP is the other technology that has had a fair impact on the market. There are two types of DLP technologies one uses one micro chip and the other uses three. Usually DLP is used to manufacture rear projectors and are of great value of the money to those that are interested in purchasing an huge screen. The do not have the image quality of the other two technologies though. Plasma is one of the oldest high definition television technologies. HDTV televisions with Plasma displays were very abundant during the first years of high definition Tv. Plasma Tvs project warm beautiful colors and solid blacks. When it comes to Tv sets, dark blacks translate into high contrast and very defined images. They also have faster refresh rates than other high definition screens. Older models did had a short lifespan and were prone to image burn in. In a sense, Plasma HDTVs have the better image quality than most HDTVs but they are heavy and can suffer from burn in if some precautions are not taken. They also require more energy to operate.

These are the most important technologies in the HDTV world as of now. Which one is the best? Well, the answer is more depending on what are you actually looking for. It is all a matter of taste.
